01

Pick Your Horse

Choose any horse from the field of 30 before the gate opens — no changing your mind once you've picked. Each horse has a trait: Speed, Stamina, Turf, or Mud. Check the track card to see which trait gets a boost and which gets a penalty this race.

02

Run the Whole Field

For each horse: red die for column, blue die for row. Find the cell — SURGE, STRONG, STEADY, FADE, STALL, or STUMBLE. Each has a value. Apply any +1 or -1 track modifier based on the horse's trait. Roll 3 times and add for their race total.

03

Rank the Field

After rolling all 30 horses, rank by total — highest wins. Ties go to better odds. Mark finishing positions on the track card. The favorite doesn't always win. The 40-1 shot occasionally does something embarrassing to everyone's expectations.

04

Check Your Pick

Win, Place, Show, or out of the money. Run all 8 tracks to complete the full Triple Crown + Championship Circuit season. Track your picks on the season tally — most wins across the circuit takes the title.

The Circuit

Eight Tracks.
Eight Different Races.

Every track boosts one horse trait and punishes another. Pick accordingly — or find out the hard way what happens to a Speed horse at Belmont.

30 horses.
8 tracks.
One pick.

Every horse in Grid Horse Racing has a trait — Speed, Stamina, Turf, or Mud — and a tier that determines how their 6×6 grid is weighted. Tier 1 favorites have more SURGE and STRONG cells. Tier 4 longshots have more STALL and STUMBLE cells, with rare explosions of brilliance.

Each track modifies every roll for the right trait by +1, and every roll for the wrong trait by -1. Over 3 rolls, that's a swing of up to 6 points — enough to move a horse from the back of the field into contention, or drop a favorite out of the money.

The notebook ships to your door. Two dice (one red, one blue) are all you add.

FAQ

Questions.

Pick one horse from the field of 30 before rolling — no changing your mind. For each horse, roll both dice three times: red die for column, blue die for row. Find the cell value (SURGE=8, STRONG=7, STEADY=6, FADE=5, STALL=4, STUMBLE=2). Apply any +1 or -1 track modifier based on the horse's trait. Add all three values for that horse's race total. Do this for all 30 horses, rank by total — highest wins. Ties go to better odds.
30 horse cards each with a full 6×6 grid, 8 real track cards, an instruction card, and a season tally. All you need to add are two dice — one red, one blue.
No. Grid Horse Racing is a completely physical pen-and-paper game. No app, no screen, no battery. Just the notebook and two dice.
Every track boosts one horse trait (+1 per roll) and penalizes another (-1 per roll). Louisville boosts Stamina and hurts Turf horses. Del Mar favors Speed and punishes Stamina. Gulfstream is turf country — Turf horses get the boost, Mud horses are useless. Each horse card shows their trait. Each track card shows which traits are boosted and penalized, with a short explanation of why.
About 5 minutes for a single race. Running the full 8-track season takes 30–40 minutes total, or you can spread it across sessions — each track card is self-contained.
Yes. Pick your horse, roll the whole field yourself. Works as a solo sim. Also plays well with multiple people — each player picks a horse before rolling, and you run the whole field once for everyone.
Grid Horse Racing is available on Amazon through the Grid Sports author store. Ships as a physical notebook — just add dice.
